For the first time, the statewide FIRST robotics competition was hosted by Missouri S&T this past Saturday. High school teams competed with robots they had built in a series of battle-style games. During the competition, high school students and other visitors were encouraged to look around at the student design teams displays, including the Missouri S&T Solar House Team. There was a great turnout and many hopefully-future students were eager to hear about our team’s project!
Solar Decathlon 2011 Location
“The Department of Energy and the Department of the Interior today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 will be held at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park, on the banks of the Potomac River along the path between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Specifically, the event will be held on the peninsula just south of the new Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial – scheduled to open in August of this year – between the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Potomac River. The Weekend(ish) Update
Friday
With the portions of the soffit above the mechanical closet and in the bedroom complete, the team continued work on the remaining interior wall and sections of the soffit. A group completed framing and placing the last interior wall. Meanwhile, others kept working on the kitchen soffit. The entire soffit along the north wall was completely attached and the western portion was framed out. The day ended when we ran out of wood for the cross members to attached the western soffit to the wall.
Saturday
Saturday morning began with a trip to the hardware store for wood. During the day, the team cut all cross members for the western wall and installed the framed soffit. The only major problem posed difficulties placing the soffit into the northwest corner were the soffit makes and L shape. Upon completion, the members working combined their resources to frame out the ceiling above the bathroom. This completion marks the end or major framing to the inside of the house.
Tuesday
Tuesday was brief with the most notable work being the complete framing of the chimney box that will house plumbing exhaust and water supply to and from the evacuated tubes on the roof. Other work was some minor touch-ups to the weekend framing.

S&T and Mizzou Team up
Over the last few weeks the Missouri S&T solar house team has been making arrangements with students and faculty in the Architectural Studies program at Mizzou to work together on the 2009 Solar Decathlon. Last Saturday 16 students and 2 advisers joined us here in Rolla to discuss the partnership.
Being one of only two schools without an Architecture program, we need some help. After proposing the idea to some of the faculty, we found out they loved it. They are ready to hop on board with all-out effort. The first thing we needed to work out would be team structure. We have decided that Mizzou students will be primarily responsible for the architectural and interior design features of the house. S&T students will be primarily responsible for the systems in the house and "making it work." It will be great to have Architects fighting for the looks of the house and the engineers fighting for the systems and functionality of the house.
We had to come up with a new name that could incorporate the name of both schools into project. We have tentatively decided to call it the Show-Me Solar Project. Look out decathlon, the team from Missouri is back and better
Nothing left but the bones
Today was a successful day. It took us a little longer than expected to do what we wanted, but the rain held out. Today, we loaded up the first of three trucks (otherwise known as Truck 3). All the walls above 8 feet, the ceilings, the back deck(east side), the batteries and the inverter cabinet are all on this truck. The only things remaining are the modules and the front deck (west side).
